On June 27, 2025 I had the pleasure of attending a show at The Broom Factory in Kingston, Ontario (web link). I had never before seen any of these bands live and can happily say they delivered.

Jessica Wolowich (also of Jess & The Mess) had me excited when she pulled out a cover of Phoebe Bridgers’ Motion Sickness, which I think can give a sense of the tone set for the night. A feminine, chill sound, that can be danced to or enjoyed from a seat in the venue.

Kingston's own Luella was well introduced and carried a sense of support with her when approaching the stage, not only in the crowd but with her band too. Luella introduced the guitarist to be her father and producer and her drummer (Almond Milk) to be her neighbour. This demonstrated the tight knit community that can be found in Kingston neighbourhoods and communicated that being a musician means being a part of a supportive team. Luella announced that her deluxe album called Summer Bummer is to be released July 3rd, which had accompanying merch available via some iconic “summer bummer” tees. Speaking of merch, Luella didn’t miss the beat to provide her County Bounty X Luella Peach Ginger Tea at the venue, great to sip on while watching a live performance of the song. Luella’s song Peach Ginger Tea was performed with Almond Milk as she has released a remix of the song with him. Almond Milk’s performance was very energetic, almost like watching a workout class. He continued to engage the audience by leaping off the stage to dance with the audience members taking in the music.

The final act, Housewife, is definitely a band you should check out when you have the chance, they seem to be on the up and coming. Particularly since the band had recently opened for Metric and the Sam Roberts Band on June 4, 2025 in Quebec City. The Broom Factory performance continued riding the wave of a smooth night. With funny moments like the lead singer taking her antibiotics on stage since she had informed us prior of her experience just getting over strep throat. But with the illness barely behind her, she still exercised her talent beautifully. One of my key favourite songs was Matilda which has a great music video to go with it that follows the lead singer in a detective role searching for her love interest “matilda”. Housewife also has some great merch featuring pastel cherries, barbed wire, and delicate swords. The band’s next stop is Toronto on June 29th and July 8th.

This is the best curation of bands I have seen in awhile, all of them supported each other so nicely and contributed to a rounded soft sound. It was nice to see some differences, but not drastically so that it gave you whiplash between genres. If you like the Beaches, Phoebe Bridgers, or Sir Chloe I’d recommend you check out these artists.
