OREO COOKIE BLUES - DAVID WITZER

Lonnie Mack has long been an influence on my musical taste. The first song I learned on guitar as a pre-teen was Lonnie's instrumental, 'Memphis'.

This song, 'Oreo Cookie Blues', was written by Lonnie Mack and Mark Wilkerson. Lonnie included it on his album 'Strike Like Lightning', released on Alligator Records in 1985.

With a respectful tip-of-my-hat to Lonnie, I recorded this song in my music room, accompanied on lead guitar by my good friend Randy Anguish. The rest of the layered guitar work was me, along with my vocals. I included my rendition on a small-run independent CD release titled TENNESSEE STREET.

Oreo Cookie Blues found its way to a unique radio station at Greenwood, Mississippi, WABG 960AM. The song rose to be the second-most requested song on their WAGB Weekly Countdown.

WABG continues to broadcast throughout the Mississippi Delta, serving the blues-rich landmark destinations of Clarksdale, Greenwood, Itta Bena, Dockery and Indianola. WABG also streams worldwide at www.awesomeam.com from its broadcast shack situated on a plantation just a short distance from the Zion Church on Money Road where Robert Johnson was buried.

Before Lonnie Mack's passing, I had corresponded with him from time-to-time and it felt rewarding to know he enjoyed my version of his song. He referred to me as his 'Oreo Blues Brother, Dave'.
