We caught up with Peter Van Helvoort, the co-founder of Teenage Kicks and a member of The Glorious Sons, to discuss their resurgence, sound, upcoming plans, and the best places to eat in Kingston.
A Bit of History
The original run of Teenage Kicks kicked off in 2010 and came to a close in 2015. During their heyday, they released notable EPs, an LP, and a plethora of singles through their "Singles Club" operated from their house/recording studio in Toronto.
The Resurgence
Peter Van Helvoort shares the story of Teenage Kicks' revival. It all began when he booked a show for his other band, "Darling Congress," at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern a few years back. The night took an unexpected turn when Peter, along with his brother Jeff, decided to perform a few Teenage Kicks songs to cap off the event. The chemistry was undeniable, and the spark reignited. The band's resurrection was marked by a memorable performance, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Sound
Describing their sound as a modern-day CCR, Peter reflects on the evolution of their music. However, he acknowledges that their sonic journey has led them to explore a range of sounds. Notable tracks to delve into if you're new to Teenage Kicks include "Time Is Not A River," "Digging Up Old Bones," "Houdini," and "I Get What You Give."
Favorite Eateries in Kingston
When asked about his go-to spot for pre or post-gig meals in Kingston, Peter reveals, "My TGS bandmates got me hooked on Wooden Heads. They make the best Caesar salad I've ever had."
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Teenage Kicks is gearing up to create new music, line up more gigs, and maintain their authenticity. Peter emphasizes the importance of their upcoming songs being a natural progression rather than a repetition of past work. With a deep-rooted connection to the band's legacy, Peter aims to craft music that he can truly be proud of.
In conclusion, As they prepare to take the stage once again, fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and fresh energy that defines the essence of Teenage Kicks.
