Central City Jazz is a 9-piece group consisting of saxes, brass, guitars and rhythm, with a repertoire of contemporary and classic jazz, swing, R&B and improvisation. Central City has played many large corporate events and several venues in the Lower Mainland to much regard.
We evolved from the Whalley Legion Junior Band, (which in turn evolved from the Surrey Fireman’s Band in 1958). The Whalley Legion Junior Band (WLJB) provided an artistic outlet for youth aged 12 to 18 from Surrey and surrounding areas, and developed into an award-winning marching band, colour guard, concert band, choir, and jazz big band. After many years traveling the world with the WLJB, the folks who ran the band decided it was time to turn it over to us “young ‘uns”. We young ‘uns took the group overseas once again in 2000, and then, as members left to pursue other interests, we took a new direction with a smaller jazz combo and became reborn as Central City Jazz.
