Cutting through stylistic boundaries, this chamber jazz quartet moves in and out of freeform improvisations, grooves, and lyrical melodic statements, and takes the listener to surprising yet not totally unfamiliar places. Led by Vancouver guitarist Gordon Grdina, and joined by the wonderful Swedish saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist (Atomic and others), the group also features the amazing clarinetist François Houle, bassist Karlis Silins, and drummer Kenton Loewen. Structure and logic are at the core of their music, but there’s plenty of space, texture, and rest, and they seamlessly embrace mainstream sensibilities as well as those of the avant-garde. They have a wonderful CD, Unlearn (Spool).
