Considered one of Canada’s pre-eminent acoustic bassists, Roberto Occhipinti has always maintained dual careers in both the jazz and classical fields. Latin jazz has been an abiding passion – witness his appearance on three of Jane Bunnett’s Cuba-focused CDs and a trio of albums with Cuban-born piano virtuoso Hilario Durán. Building upon the success of his 2005 Juno-nominated Yemaya, Occhipinti continues his unique exploration of orchestral textures and Latin rhythms. His A Bend in the River is currently nominated for a Juno for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album.” His quartet, including Luis Deniz saxophone, David Virelles piano and Dafnis Prieto drums, represent a rare opportunity to hear the perfect melding of Cuban music with mainstream jazz as played by some of Canada’s finest musicians. “Brilliant . . . a thoughtful, fluid blend of jazz, classical and world music.” – Just Jazz
