Drip Plugged
It seems we've heard the last of Mazinaw. Well, for now, anyway. The Vancouver rock trio's frontman, Steve Wright, is moving to Sechelt next month, which means his band will be on hold until he gets settled. Mazinaw fans will have a chance to say goodbye when the group plays the Railway Club on February 6. "We're just gonna go all out with all our props and gadgets," Wright said, "because it's our last show for a while."
Not the last one ever, mind you. "The band is still going to operate, and I'll come over for shows and rehearsals and all that jazz and do some tours. But not for a while."
Wright's relocation means the end of the Vinyl Drip, the semi-legendary weekly tradition he hosted, originally at the Silvertone Tavern and latterly at the Media Club. More like a raucous basement party on-stage than a regular DJ night, the Vinyl Drip presented patrons with some 800 records to choose from and no musical boundaries. If this led to a Nick Drake track being followed up by selections from Abba and Iron Maiden, that was all part of the fun. The final edition of the Vinyl Drip took place on January 18. "It's the end of an era," Wright said when the Straight called him the day after. "My loyal girls were there crying last night."
