The Shuffle Demons, last showing up here for the 2004 JazzFest, started out as buskers at the corner of Yonge and Bloor nearly three decades ago and it didn’t take long for these humorous provocateurs of “bop rap” to become Toronto club faves and, eventually, national jazz superstars. Behind their beatnik shtick was always lots of primo jazz technique and ideas, and group founder Richard Underhill alto/baritone saxophone has evolved into one of Canada’s most interesting composers and performers. So if you like your hard bop to be funkified by talented jazz guerrillas, don’t miss out on this unique show.
“There were teeth-rattling riffs, pants-on-fire soloing and a dose or two of delicious shrieking dissonance. These guys are fun.” – Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star
