The Henneman String Quartet is an improvising chamber ensemble from the Netherlands. Their contemporary compositions reflect the major trends of 20th century music, plus other influences that include foreign poetry, Monteverdi madrigals, and pop tunes. Led by gifted violist/composer Ig Henneman, who has worked with Ab Baars, Misha Mengelberg, and Leroy Jenkins, this unusually configured quartet features Oene van Geel violin/viola, Alex Waterman cello, and the legendary Mark Helias guesting on double bass. These four highly intuitive musicians create emotionally complex soundscapes.
Renaissance forms are evoked, modernist motifs are brandished, but Hennemans compositions are designed to accommodate refined improvisational skills. -The Wire
