Better put on your most scorch-proof dancing shoes before you check out this red-hot sextet from Toronto. The newest rage in Afrobeat, Mr. Something Something have taken the indigenous instruments and primal dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana and then added jazz-based improvisations and western instruments. The resulting explosion of horn-driven funk was first heard on 2004’s self-titled debut CD. Sophomore recording The Edge followed quickly, garnering even more ecstatic reviews for their bubbling polyrhythms, chiming guitars, vibrant beats and monster grooves. Their live shows, incendiary and ecstatic, are not to be missed. The band includes drummer Larry Graves, sax/vocalist John MacLean, vocalist Johan Hultqvist, Liam Smith bass and Pat MacDougall guitar.
“Punchy horn riffs, jazzy drums, percolating guitars . . . these guys rank with any Afrobeat in the world today.” –Exclaim!
