Lubo Alexandrov/Kaba Horo Ensemble
JUNE 26 Performance Works
The Bulgarian born guitarist/vocalist Lubo Alexandrov has developed a unique musical style, combining the wild drive of Bulgarian dance music—the festive spirit of gypsy songs, and the emotional intensity of Turkish music all with the hip cool of urban jazz grooves. Splitting his time between Montreal, New York, Istanbul, and Bulgaria, Alexandrov’s melding of Balkan music with other cultural strains has culminated in the fulfillment of his creative dream—the Kaba Horo Ensemble. The name Kaba Horo is made up of the Turkish word kaba (low, rough) and the Bulgarian word horo (traditional Bulgarian dance), evoking the energetic, ethnic flavour of the music and the diversity of musical influences on the ensemble’s sound. A truly global band, they are a mix of Bulgarian, Bosnian, and Montreal-based musicians. Their passionate, go-for-the-throat spirit and energy will knock you out. With Emil Illiev accordion/vocals, Georgi Stankov bass, Martin Auguste drums/vocals, Eric Hove sax, Anes Beglerbegovic darbuka/bendir.
