About

Rumba Calzada

since circa 1991
You’re guaranteed to learn the Spanish word for “adrenaline” after spending the night with Vancouver’s Rumba Calzada, a dazzling septet of Latin jazz
all-stars who have been filling the dance floor (and making award-winning recordings) since 1991. The band is fronted by percussionist-composer Raphael Geronimo, third generation in a family of professional musicians and dancers, who studied extensively in Cuba and New York City. Rumba Calzada have cooked up a tasty version of salsa by forging a sizzling combination of Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin grooves. Although you’ll hear a lot of Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri in the band, these red-hot musicians have created their own unique, dance-perfect sound that ’s

been play-listed in Miami ’s Latin clubs. Rumba Calzada includes Lou Mastroianni piano, Rolo Preza vocals/percussion, Rod Murray trombone, and Allan Johnston bass, Vince Mai trumpet and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Apivor.
