About

Bob Downey

Hall Of Fame Inductee 2007
Most Influential Musician from 1956-1959

One of Victoria's earliest entertainers from the 1950's, Bob's primary instrument is the drums but known for stepping up to the microphone and capturing audiences with his alluring voice. Bob taught music to many young musicians who thank him to this day for his patience and tutelage.

I remember receiving a phone call from Bob Downey in the early 70's when he had a music shop in the Esquimalt Plaza...He was called out of town and needed a sub for a weekend gig at the Sherwood Inn. Now..I reminded him that I'm a trombone player, end of story (almost). Despite my protests he reminded me that my younger brother had a drumkit in the basement that I'd knock around on occasionally. Keep in mind that he had never heard me play, and I never wanted the gig, anyway, but I reluctantly accepted and showed up to the stage where Bob had dutifully set up his kit for me. We struggled through the evening, me trying to keep out of the way in what must have been the worst drum appearance ever in Victoria. We all agreed that I wasn't needed for the second nights' performance and I went on my way (I DID get paid, which was kinda important). I believe they cried and whined to Bob so that he showed up for the second night (thankfully). I might add that the guys were great - very understanding and they held their hostilities admirably. I wish I could remember their names. - Bob Cadwallader
