SPM MUSIC proudly present the 6th Annual Festival of Guns, “A Rock ‘n’ Roll Experience” showcasing some of Vancouvers best talent.
VANCOUVER’S ASIAN ROCK SCENE GETS A CHANCE TO SHINE
Local Asian Indie rockers come together to showcase their music at ‘Eastern Influences’
The gap between the Asian and Western local music scene is about to be bridged. SPM Music, as part of it’s annual Rock n’ Roll ‘Festival of Guns’, is set to bring some exposure to the little-known Asian Indie Rock scene with the live concert event ‘Eastern Influences’ taking place on November 15th at the Royal Unicorn Cabaret (147 East Pender Street). Expect crunching guitar riffs, pounding drumbeats and explosive harmony with an Eastern edge as three of the city’s most talented Asian Rock groups take to the stage to display their talent.
“This event is new territory for SPM Music,” Says Sean McKay, Owner of SPM. “To branch out and do something that caters to a certain local culture, in this case the Asian music scene and its fans, should make for a very cool bill.”
Eastern Influences features a diverse flavoring of the city’s Asian rock groups. Headliners the Rev Squad consists of all Chinese members and they are a high-energy indie rock outfit with serious power pop overtones and a classic rock feel. Having just released their debut EP, New Revelation, the band has had a successful year, being featured on Channel M, winning first place in the Vancouver Asian Film Festival Singer/Songwriter Challenge and completing a Canadian mini-tour.
Next on the bill is Larme, a band whose sounds leans closer towards melodic heavy metal and classic Japanese rock. Containing members from both Japan and Hong Kong, Larme's music has an orchestral and epic feel to it recalling X Japan and Iron Maiden. Creating a soundscape of emotion is this band's cornerstone and their music weaves from symphonic tranquility to energized heavy metal.
Opening up the show is young up-and-comers Rein Free, bringing a heavy rock experience and a kick-ass live set. Currently in the studio recording their first CD, this group has played extensive live shows and continues to push the limits with their unique brand of music and strong live presence.
The setting for the show couldn’t be more fitting. The Royal Unicorn Cabaret is adorned with Chinese characters and used to be a Chinese restaurant and Kareoke lounge. It has since been converted into a live music bar and become a regular hangout for Vancouver’s scenesters. Rest assured that the guitars will wail and the booze will flow. This is, after all, still Rock n’ Roll regardless of the culture it comes from.
The Festival of Guns is an annual Rock n’ Roll event encompassing 13 venues and 60 bands and it runs from Novermber 15th to 18th. The festival is run by SPM Mu
