Bach’s St. John Passion is an oratorio that derives its subject from chapters of the Gospel of St. John that recount the last days of Jesus’ life. First performed in 1724, it is a vivid and intense work whose theatricality is framed perfectly by Bach’s sublime musical prose. Smaller, shorter, more intimate and more dramatic than the better known of Bach’s passions - St. Matthew - “John” is a musical experience not to be missed. A rare opportunity to hear one of Bach’s sacred masterpieces performed on period instruments.
