This band of young men from NYC believe in swing and will be presenting a night of choice standards and riveting original music. Saxophonist Jacob Chung moved to New York City in 2022 to be as close as possible to his inspirations. Having charmed audiences in his hometown Toronto with a dynamic commitment to swing, he enrolled at Manhattan School of Music to study with Vincent Herring, whose advocacy for Jacob’s talent led to Jacob’s sophomore album The Sage for the Cellar Music Group label, featuring both Herring and drummer Joe Farnsworth, due for release in November 2024. Then under the guidance of Grant Stewart at the Tribeca Jazz Institute, Jacob connected with the likes of Chris Byars, Eric Alexander, Ari Roland, and Ken Peplowski, whose mentorship launched a period of rapid development that has since found Jacob maintaining an active performance schedule at The Django, Ornithology, Smalls, and other NYC clubs. Since moving to NYC, Jacob has performed with Ken Peplowski, Peter Washington, the Mingus Big Band, Pasquale Grasso, Ari Roland, Joe Farnsworth, Richard Cortez, and is a regular member of Erena Terakubo’s Sextet. In the summer of 2023, Jacob performed at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and at the Burlington Jazz Festival (VT) as a member of the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program. Jacob was also awarded “Outstanding Soloist” in Downbeat Magazine’s 2024 Student Music edition. In October 2024, Jacob played at the Oregon Coast Jazz Party in Newport, Oregon alongside Randy Brecker, Terell Stafford, Dion Tucker, Katie Thiroux, and Chuck Redd.
Pianist Tyler Henderson and his trio, composed of Caleb Tobocman and Hank Allen-Barfield, are one of the most in-demand rhythm sections in NYC. Tyler maintains a monthly residency at Mezzrow and continues to tour the US with several bands. The Tyler Henderson Trio is set to record their debut LP on Cellar Live in November 2024.
