Event Description

Bassist Sean Drabitt now spends most of his time playing in New York City, but returns home to Victoria a few times each year. Due to his stature, he can attract outstanding artists to the stage for a few Victoria gigs when in town.

About Brad Turner
Trumpeter, pianist, drummer, and composer Brad Turner is one of Canada’s most in-demand and highly esteemed jazz musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John Scofield, Michael Moore, Reneé Rosnes, Jimmy Greene, Ingrid Jensen, Peggy Lee, Dave Douglas, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Kenny Werner, Mino Cinelu, Russell Malone, Terri Lyne Carrington, Charles McPherson and Ernie Watts. As a leader, Brad has released eleven albums, nine as a trumpeter with the Brad Turner Quartet, and two as a pianist with his trio. Four of those releases have been nominated for Juno awards.

In 1997 and 1998 and again in 2017, Brad won Juno Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, recognizing his work in the internationally acclaimed electric jazz group Metalwood, which he co-leads.

Winner of National Jazz Awards for Jazz Composer of the Year (2000 and 2002), Brad was awarded Musician of the Year for 2005, and was a recipient of the 2006 Victor Lynch-Staunton Prize for excellence in musical achievement.
In 2008 and again in 2009, Brad took home National Jazz Awards for Trumpeter of the Year and Producer of the Year, and was the recipient of the 2014 Vancouver Mayor’s Art Award for music.

About Phil Dwyer
Phil Dwyer is a Member of the Order Of Canada. He was cited for “his contributions to jazz as a performer, composer, and producer, and for increasing access to music education in his community.” In January 2015, he was recognized by the Royal Conservatory of Music as an Honorary Fellow. These distinctions arise from an illustrious thirty-year career collaborating with a storied roster of great musical artists, crossing stylistic and geographic borders. Phil has appeared on ten Juno Award-winning recordings and over thirty nominated recordings. He is also a recipient of the prestigious K.M. Hunter Prize for excellence in the arts.

He remains an active performer, writer, and recording artist. Phil curates “Phil Dwyer’s Jazz Canada” for CBC Radio Music, programs music for The Old School House in Qualicum Beach, and is a partner in SeaWind Musical Instruments.
