All community members are welcome to join us as we honour Nex Benedict, and call on doing better for our youth. The vigil will be held on March 28th from 6-8pm at Market Square. There will be speakers, singing, and a community care table.
Nex was a 16 year old, non-binary, Indigenous (Choctaw) teen who died as a result of anti-trans violence and growing hateful rhetoric, policies and action.
"He would always keep the room in a good mood. He was always one of the brightest kids in the room, whether he would smile or not."
"Nex was a fiery kid...He would light up a room and jump to defend any of his friends if they were getting picked on."
"Nex's friend group would always get in trouble for laughing too loudly, particularly in art class."
CONTEXT
"Nex died one day after being beaten unconscious in a school bathroom, and following more than a year of bullying and harassment at school. This is heartbreaking... young people in Oklahoma and across the country deserve to be safe and respected at school." - Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign
"Benedict's loved ones had reported that Benedict had been experiencing bullying for more than a year leading up to the incident. Their death had renewed the fight against the growing number of anti-trans bills in the US, which many queer advocates say played a vital hand in the teen's death." - The Concordian
