Throughout its career, Primus has practiced a brand of irreverent rock ‘n’ roll that has had a huge effect on the music scene. Describing his band’s music as “psychedelic polka,” frontman Les Claypool has led his trio on a mission to break boundaries and perform some of the craziest music since the golden age of Frank Zappa. Primus’ twenty-year-plus journey has taken it to Lollapalooza, Woodstock ’94, stages and festivals all over the world, to recording television theme songs (“South Park”), and into the Billboard Top 10 (for the album Pork Soda). Both 1991’s Sailing the Seas of Cheese (“Jerry Was a Race Car Driver”, “Tommy the Cat”) and 1993’s Pork Soda went platinum, and Frizzle Fry (1990) and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995) have been certified gold.
They Can’t All Be Zingers, a new collection, rounds up many of the band’s greatest moments, and comes on the heels of Blame it on the Fish, a live concert DVD. A tour featuring the original Primus lineup of Larry LaLonde, Claypool, and Tim Alexander is one of the most anticipated of the decade. Whether you think of its music as funk metal, alternative metal, thrash funk, or simply alternative rock, Primus is too slippery for one label to encompass, and attracts rabid fans from nearly all subgenres.
