Few musical genres are as joyful as Afropop, and few African bands have the flair of Cape Town’s Freshlyground. A septet drawing on the musical traditions of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, Freshlyground formed in 2002. Sparked by their mesmerizing frontwoman, vocalist/guitarist Zolani Mahola, the group’s highly rhythmic and groove-based music caught on quickly. Within a few years their international touring began, leaving audiences all over the world wowed by their high-energy stage show. Then came their duet with Shakira on Waka Waka at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which thrilled a billion listeners. Now considered one of South Africa’s musical treasures, Freshlyground are finally headed here. Please put on your dancing shoes for what will be one of the most party-hearty Victoria debuts in TD JazzFest history! Josh Hawks bass guitar/vocals, Seredeal Scheepers keyboard/percussion, Kyla Rosesmith violin/vocals, Simon Attwell flute/mbira/harmonica/saxophone, Julio Sigauque electric guitar/acoustic guitar, Peter Cohen drums
