Event Description

Rockin’ the Square, presented by the City of Kingston is back with JUNO Award and Polaris Music Prize-winning artist Haviah Mighty.

On July 29, community members of all ages are invited to Springer Market Square for an exciting and free live performance from Haviah Mighty, 2022 Juno Rap Album of the Year winner. The show starts at 8 p.m.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Haviah Mighty to the Springer Market stage. Her ability to combine rap, song, and instrumental elements is unrivalled. Music fans of all ages can anticipate a show that will have them up and dancing all night to Haviah’s award-winning sounds,” says Jayson Duggan, Performing Arts Manager.
Music fans of all ages can anticipate a show that will have them up and dancing all night to Haviah’s award-winning sounds.

Haviah Mighty is a hip hop artist from Brampton, Ont., and has spent her life developing her skills as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, and performer, culminating in a style of profound introspection and incisive socio-political critique. Her dynamic combinations of rap, song, and instrumental transition seamlessly from hip-hop to soul to afrobeats with a meticulous flow and cadence that transcends any traditional expectation of genre.

Rockin' the Square has previously featured artists such as Moist, Arkells, The Trews, Big Sugar, Sarah Harmer, 54-40, Cold Creek County, Platinum Blonde with Spoons, Wintersleep, David Wilcox, Classic Albums Live and Hawksley Workman along with local performers The Glorious Sons, Miss Emily, Kasador, Abby Stewart, Tom Savage, PS I Love You, Greg Ball, Paper Ladies and Rueben deGroot.

Accessible seating is available and limited lawn chair space is provided. The Utilities Kingston water buggy will be on-site, so we encourage everyone to bring their reusable water bottle to reduce waste.

Rockin' the Square is held rain or shine. For updates watch the City of Kingston social channels.

About Haviah Mighty

In 2019, Haviah Mighty earned breakout success with her album, 13th Floor, making her the first hip-hop artist and the first Black woman to win the Polaris Music Prize, celebrating the “Best Canadian Album of the Year” - but she didn’t stop there. With her JUNO Award-winning mixtape, Stock Exchange (November 2021), Haviah made history once again as the first woman to ever win within the Rap Album of the Year category. Recognition has spread internationally, garnering praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, GRM Daily, FADER, Hot New Hip Hop, and so many more.

Haviah pushes forward continuing to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in hip-hop. Unyielding and irresistible – Haviah Mighty will be heard.

Emancipation Day

This year, Rockin’ the Square is aligned with the City’s commitment to recognize Emancipation Day on August 1. The City, working with Kingston residents and community partners, will be announcing additional programming in the coming weeks organized around the themes of remembrance and resilience, intended to educate, celebrate and reflect on this day and what freedom means.
